the project

old songs, new forms.

The Sunday Static is an original music project created and directed by Luca Vignolo around a recurring imagined band. He writes the music and lyrics, records selected instrumental parts and directs the arrangements and production. The songs draw on different influences, but recurring voices, instrumental character and a shared approach to arrangement keep the band’s sound recognisable.

Where it began

Old songs,
new forms

The project began in summer 2025 with a return to demo recordings made more than twenty years earlier. A few became starting points for the first singles and the debut EP. Revisiting them led naturally to new writing.

Most of the catalogue now consists of new songs written for The Sunday Static, though an older fragment may still spark an idea.

What began as a return to an archive became a living songwriting project.

A musical inheritance

Musical language

Conservatoire training informs a sound that draws on classical music, jazz, blues, rock and pop. British records of the 1960s and 1970s are a particular reference: their melody, rhythm and texture show how limited means can become character.

That inheritance leaves room for the air around an instrument, the irregularity of a performance and details that emerge through repeated listening. Familiar forms remain useful when there is something personal to say through them.

Rooted in musical history without trying to preserve it under glass.

From a first idea to a finished recording

How the music is made

Writing

Some songs begin with an older fragment; others arrive with a chorus almost complete. Luca writes and revises the music and lyrics, paying attention to what a line means, how it sings and whose point of view it carries.

The imagined members’ established personalities act as compositional constraints. They help determine which ideas fit a song and where a change of direction still feels true to the band.

Performance & production

Selected guitar and keyboard parts are recorded by Luca and shaped within the arrangement. Their timing and texture help define the finished recording alongside the band’s recurring instrumental signatures.

Mixing and mastering favour warmth, presence and dynamics over sheer level. The aim is for each track to belong to the same catalogue while retaining the particular character of its song.

Generative tools

Generative and AI-assisted tools support selected vocal and instrumental performances and parts of technical finishing, alongside conventional recording and editing. They help keep each imagined member’s timbre and manner of playing recognisable across releases, while the song determines which performances belong.

Luca writes the music and lyrics and directs the arrangements and final form of each recording.

The final shape of a song comes from listening, revision and choice.

The imagined band

Five voices,
one project

Meet the band

The imagined band gives the music a public identity of its own, separate from Luca’s professional and private life. It also creates room for a coherent world around the songs, shaped by the sounds and atmosphere he returns to as a writer.

James, Martha, Oliver, Ellie and Dan are recurring characters with distinct musical temperaments. Treating them as a band creates useful constraints: who might lead a song, how each person would phrase it, and which arrangements would feel true to them. Those limits can prompt new choices while giving the catalogue continuity.

Their shared story is set in southern England, echoing the British records that shape the project’s sound. James, Martha and Oliver retain recognisable vocal identities across releases. Each member has an instrumental signature too: the timbre of their instrument, a characteristic touch and an expressive way of playing. These details keep the group recognisable even as the songs change direction.

A song changes shape depending on who leads it.
