Old songs, new forms
The Sunday Static is an independent music project created and directed by Luca Vignolo. It brings together original songwriting, production and an imagined band identity, giving the music a consistent set of voices, personalities and visual references.
The project began when he returned to a collection of demo tapes recorded more than two decades ago and heard only by a small circle of friends. Rather than treating them as relics from another time, he began revisiting them as unfinished possibilities — songs that might reveal something new when approached with greater experience and a wider creative palette.
New writing soon became part of the process. The Sunday Static now brings together songs from different periods, connected not by their age but by the emotions, questions and musical instincts running through them.
Musical language
Luca is a conservatoire-trained musician and composer who has played since childhood, primarily on piano, organ and guitar. His musical vocabulary draws from classical music, jazz, blues, rock and pop, with a particular affection for British records of the 1960s and 1970s.
Those records are less a template than a musical language: melody, rhythm, texture, lyrical meaning and invention working together. The technical limits of the period often demanded commitment and ingenuity, encouraging artists and producers to turn constraint into character. Commercial ambition was part of that world. So was a willingness to experiment, take risks and leave room for details that emerged slowly through repeated listening. The results could feel less controlled, less standardised and more open to chance, human irregularity and emotional presence.
The Sunday Static aims to retain some of that openness within a contemporary production setting: the air around an instrument, the movement of a performance, the warmth of imperfect textures and the sense that a song can reveal something new with each listen.
Writing and identity
The music and lyrics of every Sunday Static song are written by Luca. He also develops the arrangements, production choices and overall artistic direction, while performing selected instrumental parts across the catalogue.
Contemporary production and generative technologies extend what one person can realise, helping to shape the voices, characters, visual world and elements of the finished sound. They expand the creative palette, while the writing, interpretation and final decisions remain guided by musical intention.
Each member of The Sunday Static embodies a distinct musical temperament, and those personalities influence the way the songs are arranged and expressed. James brings a sharper rock instinct; Oliver leans towards soul, funk and groove; Dan adds rhythmic energy; Ellie favours melodic bass lines; and Martha introduces a more intimate, reflective dimension.
Together, they act as creative perspectives through which a song can change colour, emphasis and emotional character.
Roots, not rules
The Sunday Static is rooted in musical history without trying to preserve it under glass.
Familiar forms — even clichés — can still carry meaning when used with taste and approached from a personal angle. Some ideas endure because they have become part of our shared musical vocabulary: the language through which generations of songs have learned to speak.
The aim is to understand that inheritance, recognise why it still works and make it personal.
