About the track
“Roll on” extends The Sunday Static’s sound beyond the British-rooted indie rock of the EP Under the Hiss and towards the language of the American road song. A bright, cyclical guitar riff and a prominent bass line drive the track, while warm drums, discreet Hammond organ textures, a brass arrangement and layered backing vocals bring in touches of soul, R&B and Motown without slipping into retro pastiche.
On the surface, the story is deliberately simple: two people get into a car and leave without a plan. The details are ordinary — half a tank, a paper map, bad songs and gas-station food — but the journey feels less like a romantic getaway than a quiet refusal of routine. As the road takes over and the signal begins to disappear, escape becomes a way of stepping outside the noise and alienation of everyday life. The artwork reflects the same tension between freedom, motion and disappearance.
Following the darker and more inward-looking atmosphere of Under the Hiss, “Roll on” widens the band’s palette into something warmer, more immediate and more suited to the summer months. It also acts as a bridge between the EP and The Sunday Static’s next album, planned for later this autumn.

Lyrics
Pack the trunk, shove it shut
Got a half tank and a full-blown rush
Your hair up, my old cap
We got two bad songs and a paper map
Window down, let it breathe
Say the word, let the night run deep
The backseat’s a mess, the dash is cracked
But when you look at me, I don’t look back
Roll on, roll on
Names blurred on the signs
Roll on, roll on
Leaving towns behind
One hand on the wheel, your laugh in mine
Roll on, roll on
Past the county line
Gas station fries, fifty cents off
You steal my drink, I let it go soft
Sunburned knees, dust on your jeans
We laugh so hard at nothing, it seems
If the world calls out, let it ring
We got a long road out and a low song in
The sky keeps score, the fields fall back
When you lean on me, I don’t look back
Roll on, roll on
Names blurred on the signs
Roll on, roll on
Leaving towns behind
One hand on the wheel, your laugh in mine
Roll on, roll on
Past the county line
Pull over once where the gravel bends
The radio fades, then comes back again
A freight train rolls along the line
If this is lost, let the map stay blind
Roll on, roll on
Names blurred on the signs
Roll on, roll on
Leaving towns behind
One hand on the wheel, your laugh in mine
Roll on, roll on
Past the county line
Roll on, roll on
Names blurred on the signs
Roll on, roll on
Till the signal cuts
