Sunless morning

Lyrics
Thomas wakes early
Same as before,
Kettle is singing
There on the stove.
Toast on the table,
Radio low;
Something feels different,
But nobody knows.
He pulls the curtain,
Looks at the street.
Lamps on the pavement
Still glowing weak;
Roofs in the distance
Black against grey:
Morning has vanished,
Sunlight away.
Where is the sun today?
Nobody knows;
No gold on windows,
No light on the road.
People are standing still
Watching the sky,
Waiting for something,
Drifting nearby.
He straightens his collar,
Tightens his tie,
Checks in the mirror:
One careful eye.
Cold in the doorway,
Hands in his coat;
Someone is pointing
High past the road.
Cars on the highway
Slow to a line;
Drivers are leaving
Engines behind,
Walking together
Up to the hill,
Trying to see
What the sky will reveal.
Thomas looks down at
The watch on his wrist:
Quarter past nine now,
He can’t work like this.
Horn in the silence,
Sharp in the lane;
Someone is calling
Out his name.
Where is the sun today?
Nobody knows;
No light on windows,
No shine on the road.
Everyone walking now
Up to the hill;
Everyone stopping,
Everyone still.
Thomas keeps honking
There in his lane,
While half of the city
Sees what he can’t.
